Joint Fluid Therapy
Joint fluid therapy, also called viscosupplementation, is used to treat pain associated with osteoarthritis in patients who have failed to see results from simple painkillers or physical therapy and exercise. SUPARTZ® Joint Fluid Therapy is a solution comprised of highly purified sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), a natural substance found in the body which is a common constituent of connective tissues and synovial fluid found in joints.

During the joint fluid therapy procedure the hyaluronic acid is injected into the knee joint. This acts as a lubricant to enable your bones to move smoothly over each other as well as acting as a shock absorber during weight-bearing activities.

Because people with osteoarthritis have low amounts of hyaluronic acid in the joints of their knees, joint fluid therapy is a viable treatment option.

Treatment

Treatment options such as SUPARTZ® Joint Fluid Therapy have helped to relieve pain in many patients who have not gotten relief from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or analgesics. Today, there are two forms of hyaluronic acid available to treat osteoarthritis of the knee – a natural product made from rooster combs and an artificial one made from bacterial cultures. If you are allergic to poultry or egg products, the manufactured product should be used.

The hyaluronic acid is given in injection form once a week into your knee for a total of three to five injections, depending on the product used. Your doctor may recommend a local anesthetic to reduce injection pain as well.

Joint fluid therapy does not work for everyone and there is no proof that it will reverse or delay the progress of your osteoarthritis.
